Hiking - South Africa

We drove through Zululand passing small villages, people living in mud or concrete block huts with thatched or corrugated metal roofs and swept dirt floors, cooking over wood fires. A few cows or sheep or goats contained by a small fence made of branches or old wire.

The rolling hills turned rugged and in Drakensberg we hiked to the top of the mountain scrambling to find handholds and footholds on the final ascent. Ancient paintings were discovered on the walls of a cave providing relief from the heat of the day.

We walked along the Dolphin Coast and the Wild Coast of the Indian Ocean, stopping to swim in the warm ocean water near Durban and along the Garden Route.
